El autor busca profundizar en los usos de la historia como herramienta política en China, por parte del Partido Comunista Chino, sus líderes, los intelectuales y la gente en general. Recurre para esto al concepto de "pasado mitologizado", entendido como la construcción de la historia en función de necesidades políticas.
